Winter Is Here… But So Is Growth

August – the final month of winter – and hasn’t it made sure we felt it? Rainy, grey, and unrelenting. But hey, if Game of Thrones taught us anything, it’s that “winter is coming” isn’t just a warning—it’s a reality check.

We’ve been quiet lately, caught up helping clients navigate reorganisations and strategic pivots. I started writing this back in July (classic move), and here we are, sliding into September. Better late than never, right?

Winter is More Than Just a Season

Recently, I was lucky to hear from a few industry legends—leaders who’ve seen many seasons come and go. One message hit home:

“Winter is a season to work through—not just survive, but plan, nurture, and prepare.”

In business, winter isn’t downtime. It’s reflection time. It’s where we review the year that’s been, get our house in order, and plot a course for spring.

Think of winter as the part of the Game of Thrones plot where everyone hunkers down, gathers allies, trains like mad, and preps for the battles ahead. That strategic grit is what sees you through to brighter days.

Spring Belongs to the Prepared

The new financial year kicks off in autumn. Planning season follows right behind. And spring? That’s when the action begins. That’s when your hard work pays off—IF you’ve done the prep.
Snow-capped challenges might look like White Walkers at the door, but the closer you get to the summit, the more sunlight you find. Longer days, warmer energy—it’s coming. But only to those who didn’t sleep through the snow.

The Dangers of Doing It All

Here’s another powerful quote I recently heard from a seasoned board director:

“Those of competence tend to attract the greatest flow of work—until they are submerged and can no longer swim.”

If that one hits you in the gut… you’re not alone. Many of us are wearing multiple hats: business owner, parent, volunteer, strategist, HR guru. It’s a lot. And no, grinding through isn’t a badge of honour. It’s burnout bait.
I’ve stepped back from a few commitments recently and made changes at work and home. The goal? Sustainable progress. Not just survival.

Build Your Own Night’s Watch

Delegation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s survival strategy for Kiwi business owners. You’re not meant to go it alone.
Without a strong team or structure, you are the business. If you’re down, so is everything else. That’s no way to build resilience, let alone growth.
So ask yourself: could your business function without you for two weeks? Or does everything grind to a halt?
